Srinagar, October 22: Indian Railways' Northern Railway zone, to provide an alternative and reliable transportation system to Jammu and Kashmir, planned a 326 km long railway line from Jammu to Baramulla joining Kashmir Valley with the Indian Railways network. Of a total length of 326 km, work has been completed in 215 km and trains are running on this route.
The work on the intervening stretch of the Katra-Banihal section, 111 km, is in progress. Construction of a huge number of tunnels / bridges on this stretch, in the highly rugged, mountainous terrain is extremely difficult due to Himalayan geology present.
Close to 7000 million tonnes of reinforcement steel, and 6700 million tonnes of structural steel, were used. Girders launching work of mega bridge no. 39 between Katra-Reasi was completed on October 20, and this is a milestone achievement on USBRL project in Jammu and Kashmir.
Ashutosh Gangal, the General Manager Northern Railway, said that bridge no. 39, located between Katra-Reasi, Reasi yard station is an engineering marvel having high, rectangular, tapered hollow piers, which span 490 meters, with Reasi station yard located over it.
Length of this bridge is 490 meters, and the bridge is on a concrete pier of 105 meters high. Reasi station yard will be accommodated on this bridge.
The Katra-Banihal section is in the Reasi and Ramban districts. Besides special Chenab and Anji Bridges, there are 35 other major and minor bridges in the section. Presently, the construction of 21 Bridges has been completed.
