An engineering marvel! Railways to complete India’s first vertical lift sea bridge at Pamban by 2022

New Delhi, October 4: Indian Railways started the construction work on the new 2.05 km Pamban railway bridge in Mandapam, which is going to connect Rameswaram to mainland Tamil Nadu. The bridge will be operational starting March 2022.
The bridge will help railways to operate trains at higher speed, and carry more weight. It will increase volume of traffic between Pamban and Rameswaram.
Indian Railways is building the country's first vertical-lift bridge which connects the Rameswaram in Arabian Sea to mainland India that will allow ships and steamers to pass through without hindrances. The bridge is likely to cost Rs. 250 crore and will have a 63-metre stretch which will lift up, while being parallel to the deck to allow access to ships.
The current bridge has 'Scherzer' rolling lift technology in which the bridge opens horizontally, to let ships pass through. The new bridge will have a 63 meters section and will lift vertically upwards, remaining parallel to the deck. It will be done using sensors at each end.

The new bridge will also have 100 spans of 18.3m and one navigational span of 63 m. It will be 3-metre higher than the existing bridge, with navigational air clearance of 22 metre above sea level.
The whole bridge will be designed paying heed to the railways' electrification plan.
