New Delhi, March 30: Clean and healthy drinking water is a right of every citizen of India. Safe drinking water gives a healthy society. Jal Jeevan Mission achieves a new milestone of providing tap water to over 4 crore rural households
An adequate, reliable, clean, accessible, acceptable and safe drinking water supply has to be available for various users. The government of India ensured this by launching Jal Jeevan Mission.

Development of in-village piped water supply infrastructure to provide tap water connection to every rural household.

This mission aims at the development of reliable drinking water sources and augmentation of existing sources to provide long-term sustainability of the water supply system.

Wherever necessary, bulk water transfer, treatment plants and distribution network to cater to every rural household
Technological interventions for removal of contaminants where water quality is an issue.
Jal Jeevan Mission is to assist, empower and facilitate States/ UTs in the planning of participatory rural water supply strategy for ensuring potable drinking water security on a long-term basis to every rural household and public institution, viz. GP building, School, Anganwadi centre, Health centre, wellness centres, etc.

States/ UTs for creation of water supply infrastructure so that every rural household has Functional Tap Connection (FHTC) by 2024 and water in adequate quantity of prescribed quality is made available on regular basis.
The mission was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15th August 2019, with the aim to provide a tap water supply to every rural home by 2024.

Now, 7.24 Crore, more than 1/3rd of rural households are getting potable water through taps. Goa has become the first state in the country to provide 100 per cent tap water supply followed by Telangana and Andaman and the Nicobar Islands. The untiring efforts of States and UTs have helped Jal Jeevan Mission provide assured tap water supply to every family living in 56 districts and over 86 thousand villages.

States and UTs are now competing with each other and focusing on the target to ensure that every household in the country gets safe drinking water so that no one is left out.
