New World record for Chenab Bridge…‘Infrastructural Marvel in Making’: Piyush Goyal

The scenic topography and pleasant weather of the state have attracted tourists from all over the world. Tourism from travel enthusiasts and pilgrims vastly contributes to the state’s economy. Now the state will have one more jewel in its crown. Indian Railways is shaping Chenab Bridge, will create a world record.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Chenab Bridge will have the widest span of the Indian broad gauge railway network in the country. The under-construction bridge over the Chenab river was recently called an “engineering marvel”.The Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir will be the highest railway arch bridge in the world at 476-meter long, (1,178 ft). The completion of the mega infrastructure project is slated for March this year.

“Infrastructural Marvel in Making: Indian Railways is well on track to achieve another engineering milestone with the steel arch of Chenab Bridge reaching closure position. It is all set to be the world's highest Railway bridge”, praised Union Minister Piyush Goyal in his tweeter massage.

The bridge is 1.3-kilometres long and spans over 1,532 feet, covering a wide gorge over the Chenab River. It is built to withstand high seismic activity and is by far the most expensive stretch of India’s 64,500-kilometre railway network. The authorities have brought a crane from Italy at a cost of Rs.20 crore to carry all the construction material to the site of the bridge. The entire project has cost the Indian Railways a whopping Rs.1,250 crore. More than 1,300 workers and 300 engineers have been deployed for the project, engineering marvel.

The project, which is being developed by the Konkan Railway, is India’s first cable-stayed Indian Railways bridge and will be a part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) section of Northern Railway in Jammu & Kashmir.
