New Delhi, September 25: Indian Railways is in the works to develop an additional source of revenue in the most creative way. It has come up with the idea of rail coach restaurants that will be established at many stations. It will serve both, passengers as well as general public.
The West Central Railways was the first to implement this idea and has released 5-year contracts under the Non-Far Revenue / NFR policy.
This policy ensures that Railways is adding bulk to their income through more sources other than just freight and the passenger receipts. Under these 5-year contracts, the offeree will be able to open their restaurants in coaches provided by Indian Railways, but ownership of the refurbished freights will remain with railways.
The rail coach restaurants will be made by refurbishing and reviving old coaches, which are almost invalid. These revived railway coaches will be established in a 200-square feet area at 7 major railway stations under Jabalpur and Bhopal division of MP. The restaurants, once they are set up, will become a source of additional income of close to Rs. 4.7 crore as non-fair revenue.
The restaurants will be developed in circulating sections of Bhopal, Itarsi, Jabalpur, Madan Mahal, Rewa, Katni Murwara, and Satna stations under the Bhopal and Jabalpur divisions.
This rail coach restaurant idea has previously been implemented in Asansol, West Bengal too.
While being inaugurated in Asansol, Restaurant of Wheels was introduced to the railway station with target of Rs. 50 lakh non-fare revenue over a period of 5 years, said a press release.
