New Delhi, September 08: In order to meet requirements of the Indian Air Force and Indian Army, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari will be inaugurating an Emergency Landing Field on National Highway-925 at the Gandhav Bhakasar Section at Barmer, in Rajasthan on Thursday, September 9.

An official statement said that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has developed a 3-km long section of the Satta-Gandhav stretch of NH-925A, as an Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) for the Indian Air Force.
 
This section is a part of newly developed 2-lane paved shoulder of the Gagariya-Bakhasar and Satta-Gandhav Section. The total length of this is 196.97 km and the cost is Rs. 765.52 crores and comes under the Bharatmala Pariyojana.
 
 
 
This new project will be improving the connectivity between villages of Barmer and Jalore districts which are situated on the international border, said the statement. The stretch is located in the western border area and will facilitate the vigilance of the Indian Army and also strengthen the infrastructure of India.
 
The statement also mentioned this is the first time that National Highway is going to be used for emergency landing by Indian Air Force.
 
It said, "Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh and Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari will Inaugurate Emergency Landing Field (ELF) and also witness aircraft operations on ELF on NH-925 on09/09/2021at Gandhav Bhakasar Section (NH-925) South of Barmer (Rajasthan)."

Moreover, 3 helipads have been constructed in the villages of Kundanpura, Singhania and Bakhasar in this project. These were built according to the requirements of the Air Force / Indian Army, which will be the basis for strengthening the Indian Army and security network on the western international border of India.
 
During normal time, the ELF will be used for the smooth flow of road traffic and during operations of ELF for Indian Air Force, the service road will be used for smooth flow of road traffic. The ELF constructed took 19 months. The work for this ELF started in July 2019 and was completed in January 2021.
 
The work was done by GHV India Pvt Ltd under supervision of IAF and NHAI.

The statement said that development of roadways as the main infrastructure has led to the construction of high-quality highways, expressways that can be used as runways with some modifications and construction of (limited) additional infrastructure for operation of various aircrafts during an emergency.
