New Delhi, July 25: Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has once again proved itself at the global stage as International Federation of Consulting Engineers commonly known as ‘FIDIC’ shortlisted the‘Atal Tunnel’ for its prestigious Project Awards 2022.
The award highlights the achievements and successes of engineering infrastructure, which have major impacts on social, economic and environmental quality of life around the world.
“After considering all the awards submissions, the awards judging panel (listed below) agreed on a shortlist comprising 28 projects for the FIDIC Project Awards 2022. The projects are an international selection drawn from China, USA, Australia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Brazil, France, India, Mongolia, Somalia and Vietnam,” Fédération Internationale Des Ingénieurs-Conseils (International Federation of Consulting Engineers) said on their website.
Appreciating BRO’s efforts, Defence Secretary of India Dr Ajay Kumar tweeted, “World lauds BRO for Atal Tunnel Work!! FIDIC Fédération Internationale Des Ingénieurs-Conseils (International Federation of Consulting Engineers) chooses Atal Tunnel among 28 best infra projects across all the continents in 2022.”
Notably, this year’s FIDIC Project Awards delineates the shift and importance of infrastructure sector in delivery of the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) and net zero, with the shortlisted projects covering not one, but all of the 17 SDGs goals across various range of project values.
The winners of the annual awards will be announced at a gala dinner on the evening of September 12, 2022 during FIDIC’s Global Infrastructure Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
On April 28, Atal Tunnel bagged the Indian Building Congress (IBC) ‘Best Infrastructure Project’ award in New Delhi.
Notably, over 30 cutting-edge infrastructures were nominated for the prestigious awards, and the strategic Atal tunnel was named the Best Projects for Excellence in the Built Environment in 2021 by the IBC Jury.
Lt General Rajeev Chaudhry, DGBR, got the prize during the IBC’s 25th annual Convention for BRO’s outstanding performance in establishing this engineering marvel connecting Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti Valley.
In an historic event on February 9, 2022, the 9.02 km long, strategically important Atal Tunnel, which runs beneath ‘Rohtang Pass’ on the Manali-Leh Highway, was officially certified by World Book of Records as the ‘World’s Longest Highway Tunnel over 10,000 Feet.’
