New Delhi, August 31: Inspite of all the Covid challenges, the Central Railway has recently launched two 61-meter open web girders for the Nerul / Belapur-Uran Project between Jasai and JNPT operating a block of 3 hours. This launch is a step towards connecting Uran with the Mumbai Suburban Network.

These two 61-meter open web girders were fabricated at the Central Railway Engineering Workshop at Manmad. These were transported and assembled at the launching site. Each of the two girders weigh around 232 MT (220 MT girder and 12MT lifting beam, holding bracket.)

The launching of the girders is complex work as the lines crossing with Panvel-Jasai-JNPT which handle heavy vehicular traffic and the Dedicated Freight Corridor line is too, under construction from JNPT to Panvel with the alignment.

The girders were launched by 2 Crawler Road Cranes (1st crane had lifting capacity of 600MT, 2nd crane had lifting capacity of 500MT, along with 1 more extra crane for emergency use of 750MT lifting capacity).

To make sure the girders were lifted safely, it was maintained vertically with a specially developed lifting frame. While lifting, the rotational movements were monitored by 3 inclinometers which were manufactured for this bridge. These inclinometers were used for the first time. The Railway’s own unit of Structural Testing was deployed by the bridge organization of Central Railway to capture launching stresses in critical members. 6 stain gauges and 2 accelerometers were used to do this.

With the launching of this the progress of Phase-II of this line is now in the advanced stage.
