Varanasi, January 13: The Varanasi junction station is currently being turned into a Zero Waste railway station, in a first-of-its kind green initiative. Efforts are being taken to ensure the bare minimum transfer of any waste materials from the main rail premises of the holy city.

This ambitious project wants to see a complete segregation and recycling of all the waste materials generated from this station, which will then be reused as manure while treated wastewater will be used for irrigation.

In a similar initiative, last year, the Varanasi section of the North Eastern Railways (NER) was to be turned into 'green zones'. All of the work, including the energy and water conservation in the division is being done for environment conservation.

Measures like water recycling plants and automatic coach washing plants installation at Manduadih and Chhapra depots and bio-toilets in coaches help in checking wastage of water, and the disposal of 2.74 lakh litres of bio-waste between tracks and also improving the sanitary conditions here.

Replacement of the diesel locomotives by electric locos with completion of electrification work, is also diminishing pollution which diesel causes. Measures like production of 33,441 units of solar power, rain water harvesting systems, digitalization of offices and complete check on single use plastic have been initiated in the division.
