North Goa, December 30: Calling it an 'architectural marvel', Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has inaugurated the first phase of a new Zuari bridge on the Zuari river in Goa which will help to improve the connectivity between North Goa and South Goa districts. Apart from it, the approach roads to the bridge were also inaugurated.
It is worth to be mentioned that the bridge is part of a Rs 2,530 crore road project covering a distance of 13.2 kilometres between Bambolim and Verna villages. Built over the Zuari river, the bridge is the second largest cable-stayed bridge in India after Mumbai's Bandra-Worli sea link.
While talking about the bridge, Dilip Buildcon Limited, which is constructing the new Zuari bridge, has said the entire eight-lane project will be complete by April 2023.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant earlier drove his car on a new bridge constructed on the Zuari river to have a first-hand experience before the inauguration of the structure.
Earlier, a large number of people gathered at the new bridge after it was thrown open for pedestrians ahead of the inauguration. The old bridge that runs parallel to it witnessed a huge traffic jam. Several vehicles, many of which were ferrying passengers to the Dabolim Airport, were caught in the massive congestion on Monday evening on the old bridge, where traffic came to a standstill for more than three hours.
