BharatBenz, in collaboration with Reliance Industries, unveiled India’s first intercity luxury concept coach powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology at the 4th Energy Transitions Working Group meeting under India’s G20 Presidency in Goa.
The mutual decision from both companies has been taken to introduce hydrogen fuel cell technology, so that the country would have another form of transportation in the future.
It is India’s first Hydrogen Fuel Cell intercity luxury coach. It is based on a customized BharatBenz coach chassis and powered by a fuel cell system designed and developed by Reliance Industries, using state-of-the-art components from international partners with significant localization.
The luxury coach will travel approximately 400 km on a single hydrogen fill and can travel long distances between cities on clean fuel. It can also deliver a gross system power of 127 kW and a total power of 105 kW.
The figures are somehow parallel to 300 BHP from internal combustion diesel engines. However, the hydrogen fuel cell is still a concept, and has yet to receive a green signal. To achieve all the trust, it will be going through a testing phase for the next 12 months.
Once it will clear all the safety trials and other related tests, the technology will be used for the future.
Apart from BharatBenz and Reliance, Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland are also not so behind in the race. They are also putting efforts on the path of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. While Ashok Motors is testing the technology developed by Reliance in one of its trucks, Tata already completed a step, and received a road-worthiness certificate for its upcoming hydrogen-powered buses.About the Author
